Summer's on its way, the kids will be out of school and people are thinking about vacation plans. Why not save on airfare and keep it close to home? There's a lot of choices for vacation fun right here in our own backyard! 

• Paradise Cove Water Park is a great choice for the whole family. Take a five-story spiral slide down Paradise Pipeline, driven by 400 gallons of water per minute, and splash into four feet of cool water. There's Sharky's Lagoon for water fun, or Parrot's Point for the younger kids. Crazy Creek takes you on a 410-foot ride with plenty of interactive fun along the way. Paradise Cove is affordable, too -- $10/person ($11.75 on weekends) for all day, or only $6.75 per head after 3 p.m. Concessions, picnic tables and umbrellas are available. 
• You might not associate ice skating with summer life in Florida, but Pines Ice Arena offers ice-skating fun year-round. Located just west of Flamingo Road on Taft Street, Pines Ice Arena is open to all ages and all levels of skaters, and features a summer skating camp for kids and hockey leagues for kids or adults. 
• If you enjoy a peaceful time out in nature, you might consider the Chapel Trail Nature Preserve. Canoes are available on Saturdays for an excursion into the wetlands of the Everglades, and a boardwalk takes you up close and personal. This 460-acre preserve gives you a great perspective on the natural beauty of our area -- bring a camera to capture the herons, egrets, red-winged blackbirds and mockingbirds. 
• If you've never seen the area from several thousand feet in the air, you might want to give the South Florida Air Shuttle a try. A light plane will take you up for a splendid view of the Everglades, to Pompano Beach, then south to Stiltsville and Key Biscayne. Flights leave from North Perry Airport. 
• Surf's up! If you've never been surfing along the South Florida coast, you don't know what you're missing. There are so many great spots to surf along the Treasure Coast...boards are easy to rent, and you might as well bring a few rods and reels along for some fishing while you're at it.
